Chapter 16: The Landlord's Ring

The malicious curses from the neighbour quickly faded away as he was dragged into the deepest bedroom of the haunted house.

Han Fei's apartment had two bedrooms, and the one in the farthest corner was locked. He had been sleeping in the other bedroom for his previous sleeping task.

A living person disappearing right before his eyes, Han Fei couldn't claim that he wasn't afraid; he was grateful that he had encountered such a helpful neighbour today.

If the neighbour from the sixth floor hadn't come over, Han Fei might have been the one dragged into the depths of the bedroom.

"Why did the monster drag him into that room? What's hidden in there?" Han Fei hadn't been to the locked bedroom yet, but he had a major advantage—he could control his curiosity. He wouldn't look where he shouldn't or go to places he shouldn't.

As the neighbour’s screams gradually vanished, Han Fei looked at the bunch of keys in his hand and silently pondered on the idea of claiming the neighbour’s inheritance. "Once the big brother monster calms down, I'll try to enter the bedroom and see if I can find the neighbour’s keys. That would be great."

Having completed the beginner's task with great difficulty, Han Fei was now able to exit the game at any time, so he was confident.

After tidying up the room a bit, he sat at the entrance of the living room and began to examine his attribute panel.

"Player number 0000, please note! Each time your level increases, you will receive one free attribute point. After level ten, you can choose your profession!"

"Player number 0000, please note! The TV-watching beginner's task has been completed! One free skill point is awarded, and you receive a task reward—the Landlord's Ring."

"The item inventory function has been unlocked, and the task reward will be stored in the inventory first."

Seeing the information about completing the task, Han Fei felt a bit disappointed. He had taken great risks to complete the task, but the reward seemed mediocre.

Han Fei first opened the item inventory and took out the Landlord's Ring.

"The Landlord's Ring (Grade G Blood Item): After the landlord's death, his beloved family members used his ashes to make this ring. Remembrance has become a bridge between life and death, and wearing this ring allows you to sense their presence."

"Their presence?" Han Fei understood after reading the item description. "Wearing this ring allows you to see ghosts?"

Han Fei tried putting on the ring directly, and the moment he wore it, he felt a chill creeping up his finger.

The closer he got to the deepest bedroom of the haunted house, the stronger the cold sensation became.

"This ring can serve as a warning. The more terrifying the ghost, the stronger the chilling sensation emitted by the ring."

"It doesn't seem like much, but it's actually quite practical. By wearing this ring, I can avoid many dangerous areas."

Han Fei still didn't understand the concept of blood items. He had previously searched for information about Perfect Life, but there was no mention of blood items.

After studying the reward item, Han Fei looked at the free skill point and free attribute point he had acquired.

"I currently have one free skill point, but the problem is that I have two abilities—cooking and acting—that have nothing to do with combat."

After a moment of contemplation, Han Fei used the skill point on acting. In this underworld game where ghosts and monsters roamed, acting might unexpectedly come in handy, just like when he was facing Wei Youfu.

"Player number 0000, your acting level is now Intermediate Level 2. When your acting reaches Intermediate Level 10, it will automatically advance to Advanced Level."

"Improving skills is quite challenging, but the beginner's task is only the most basic task, so the rewards are usually average."

Before acquiring a new skill, Han Fei decided to focus on improving his acting. After all, he wanted to conceal his identity as a living person and integrate into this extended family as quickly as possible.

As for the remaining attribute point, Han Fei didn't hesitate and directly added it to his stamina. His stamina was originally only 4, which was extremely low. When he was trying to stop the neighbour just now, he almost let him escape.

After increasing his stamina, Han Fei swung his fists a few times and clearly felt that he had become stronger, and his movements had become much smoother. "I've only added a little bit, but once I level up, I might really be able to run faster than ghosts!"

With the freedom to exit the game at any time, Han Fei felt much more relaxed now. He was finally in the mindset of truly playing a game.

Picking up the kitchen knife from the floor, Han Fei didn't disturb the monster deep in the haunted house. He planned to go to the third floor first to check on Meng Shi.

"The old lady herself isn't a bad person. If I can help her resolve her concerns, she might recognize me."

Now he had a deeper understanding of this game. Other healing games only healed the players, but this game not only aimed to heal the players but also sought to heal the NPCs. It was indeed a rare "conscience" game.

Opening the anti-theft door, just as Han Fei was about to step out of the door, he felt a chilling sensation on his ring finger. Obviously, the hallway was not safe.

"I guess you would encounter ghosts’ multiple times even if you were just going out for takeout in this place."

The chilling sensation on his finger was tolerable. Han Fei cautiously entered the hallway with the kitchen knife in hand.

He lived on the fourth floor, and the old lady's apartment was on the third floor, just one floor below, but he didn't dare to be careless.

The hallway was eerily quiet, and strangely, the voice-activated light on the sixth floor kept turning on without any sound present.

Quietly proceeding downstairs, when Han Fei reached the middle between the fourth and third floors, he stopped in his tracks.

Squatting down slowly, Han Fei glanced upwards through the gap in the staircase handrail, and the voice-activated light on the sixth floor continued to illuminate inexplicably.

"Is there someone or not?"

Moving his feet, Han Fei walked towards the third floor. When he was about to reach the third floor, the chilling sensation from the ring suddenly intensified.

"What's going on?"

Relying on the ability to exit the game at any time, Han Fei didn't retreat; he continued going downstairs and finally saw that the door of the house opposite Meng Shi's was open.

The gossip mirror on the door was cracked and shattered on the ground, and many talismans had been torn off the door.

"So, is Meng Shi not opening her door because of the people in that house across the hall?"

Taking a deep breath, Han Fei stood in front of Meng Shi's door. Before he could knock, his ring finger suddenly felt a piercing coldness!

He swiftly turned his head and found a child in the opposite room smiling and rushing towards him!

His nerves tensed instantly. In the blink of an eye, the child ran from the innermost part of the room to the doorway. Han Fei had no time to react and immediately chose to exit the game. The red hue covered the world, and the neural connection was severed. When Han Fei regained control of his body, he hastily took off the game helmet.

Feeling weak, he slumped onto the bed, his hands trembling uncontrollably. "I've been cautious enough, but if it weren't for that ring just now, I might have been in trouble. This game is really outlandish."
