Chapter 19: Diligent, Hardworking, and Positive

Han Fei declined Zhan Lele's gift. Although his social anxiety was not as severe as before, he still wasn't good at interpersonal communication. Or rather, his social skills were developing in a different direction due to the training in a certain game.

After returning home, Han Fei had a hearty meal. Previously, he had lived frugally, saving up in hopes of one day being able to buy his own house.

But ever since he started playing the healing game, his mindset completely changed. Houses? Money? Those things were too mundane!

Now, he just wanted to quietly watch the sunrise every day and savour the beauty of life.

"How did I not realize that the food from the restaurants downstairs is so delicious?"

After tidying up the table, Han Fei stared blankly at the wall covered with photos of the victims.

"My strange roommate's greatest wish is to catch the killer. But how can I face such a heinous murderer?"

"I'm just a C-list actor, while the other person is a meticulous and skilled disguiser with a strong counter-investigation awareness. They have killed eight people and managed to evade the police search. If I really find a clue about them, would that person try to silence me in reality?"

Han Fei's complexion gradually worsened. Investigating the murder case and getting closer to the real culprit was not a cool thing to do; it was extremely dangerous.

"I need to cooperate with the police, but I can't reveal the existence of the game. And the more people who know about me, the more likely that killer will come looking for me."

"Right now, they are in the dark, and I am too. We are both safe. If I step into the light, that person will definitely find ways to kill me."

Clutching his fist, Han Fei was self-aware. He was just a weakling with a strength stat of 5.

"The game can be exited, but reality cannot." Han Fei stood up from the sofa. "I can't continue to be so listless."

He turned on his computer and directly ordered a tactical metal pen, a collapsible baton, a high-power flashlight, and an electric shock self-defence device.

Then he opened relevant websites and purchased many courses on criminal psychology, self-defence, and survival training. In this era where knowledge payment had become widespread, if one was willing to spend money, they could acquire truly useful knowledge.

"I really wasted a lot of time before. I should make my life more fulfilling."

Being proactive, exercising, continuously learning and improving outside of work, people who didn't know the truth would probably think that Han Fei was a very sunny and cheerful person.

After planning, Han Fei began to study seriously. He not only needed to understand the psychology of the killer but also learn how to rescue the victims from despair. Both were matters of life and death for him.

When it was almost midnight, Han Fei locked his doors and windows and hesitantly put on his game helmet.

"I last exited on the third floor. I need to prevent that little ghost from guarding the corpse. After logging into the game, I'll run straight to the fourth floor!"

After connecting all the wires, when the stroke of midnight arrived, the world before Han Fei turned blood-red.

"Welcome to The Perfect Life! Now you can..."

Before the cold mechanical voice finished speaking in his mind, Han Fei opened his eyes wide, and at that moment, his complexion became extremely awful.

His fingers froze from the coldness of the ring, and Han Fei looked up to see that the door on the third floor, covered in talismans, was half-open. A child with an indistinct face was sitting at the doorway!

"He's waiting for me!"

Goosebumps instantly appeared on Han Fei's skin. He thought his mental resilience had greatly improved, but at this moment, he realized that he had been too naive. The horror of this eerie game had far exceeded his imagination.

"I haven't completed the mission yet, haven't stayed for three hours. If that little ghost drags me into the room..." Han Fei could hardly bear to think about it. He tried to move backward, but as soon as he moved, the child raised its head.

In the pitch-black corridor, being stared at by a child with an unclear face, Han Fei felt a chill run down his spine.

"I need to desperately run upstairs. I have a chance if I can make it to the fourth floor, but the problem is, I need to open the door." Han Fei almost fell into despair, but it was at this moment that the child suddenly stood up.

Just as Han Fei felt perplexed, the anti-theft door behind him suddenly opened.

"Come in!"

A force pulled Han Fei backward, as if urging him to enter the room.

Hearing the familiar voice, Han Fei didn't hesitate.

Opportunities only come once, so he quickly cooperated and accelerated his retreat.

With his eyes fixed on the child who started crawling frantically, Han Fei narrowly managed to enter Grandma's room.

"Bang!"

The anti-theft door was heavily closed, and the sound of nails scratching from outside continuously echoed. Han Fei sat down on the floor; his back drenched in cold sweat.

"Are you okay?" Meng Shi coughed a few times and helped Han Fei up from the ground.

"Auntie, if it weren't for you saving my life this time, I would probably be done for! Thank you!" Han Fei was sincerely grateful.

"Why did you suddenly run to the third floor?" Meng Shi's face looked bad, and her body seemed to have worsened.

"My room is haunted! And there's something else I want to ask you." Han Fei wasn't acting now; his room was really haunted.

"Wait for a moment. Let me see if that child has left." The old lady placed the red candle on the table, and the flickering flame illuminated the walls. It was at this moment that Han Fei realized the room had no lights on.

The old woman stared at the dancing flame and the shadows on the wall, taking a long time before speaking, "There's no trace of the child; he didn't follow you inside."

"What is that child? He looks so terrifying!" Han Fei finally recovered from his shock.

Meng Shi didn't speak, holding the candle, she walked shakily towards the inner room.

"Auntie, from the moment I encountered the child until you opened the door, only a short amount of time passed. Were you standing by the door the whole time? Or did you happen to notice me?" Han Fei was somewhat suspicious. He knew the old lady wasn't a bad person, but it never hurt to be cautious.

"I've been watching the opposite door from inside the room." Meng Shi placed the red candle on the table, sighed, and sat weakly on the chair. The wrinkles on her face deepened. "Chenchen is missing. I suspect he ran into the room across the hall."

"Chenchen is missing?" Han Fei was also taken aback.

"Well, do you know why I always lock Chenchen in the bedroom?" The old lady sat down wearily.

"Why?" Han Fei was genuinely curious. He recalled the scene when he first came to the old lady's house, where she opened the bedroom lock to call Chenchen out for dinner.

Han Fei almost forgot about this detail, but now he realized that something was amiss.

"It's because Chenchen always wants to go out and play with that non-existent child. I noticed it a long time ago. Chenchen would often utter a strange name, and he would sit alone next to that door covered in talismans, constantly talking as if he were communicating with another child."
