Chapter 33: Sleepless from Fear
"The sleep task must begin within five minutes, while the bathing task must be completed before 4 a.m. I have enough time to finish both tasks," Han Fei planned in his mind. "I'll start with the sleep task. By following the task requirements, I can also fulfil the three-hour restriction. At that time, I can log out whenever I want."
"The bathing task requires going to the bathroom, and it's difficult to escape supernatural events in such a confined space. However, I can log out at any time. If I encounter something beyond my tolerance, I can simply quit."
He didn't blindly accept the tasks but considered the situation comprehensively.
The beginner protection period had ended, and he had no idea what the outside world would be like. Instead of risking his safety by accepting new tasks, it was better to complete the beginner tasks in this haunted house.
After all, he had already read through nearly a hundred pages of case files to survive in this room.
As time passed, Han Fei busied himself in the room. He turned off all the lights, found a kitchen knife hidden under his pillow, and dismantled a mop handle.
To be honest, the kitchen knife provided Han Fei more psychological comfort. Even if the neighbours came to visit, he wouldn't use the knife. Only when the neighbours hesitated to enter, he would brandish a bat as a provocation, or more politely, an invitation.
To prevent the door from being locked, Han Fei deliberately didn't close it completely, leaving a small gap.
"If the ghosts in the haunted house go crazy, I'll run outside. If there are particularly troublesome neighbours outside whom I can't defeat, I'll run to the deepest bedroom in the haunted house."
With both attack and retreat options, Han Fei made all the necessary preparations and approached the bedroom near the living room. He had previously done the sleep task in this room.
"Last time, I failed because I was too nervous. I was so close to success, but my own fear held me back. This time, I'll endure for the full three hours, complete the sleep task, and then have enough leeway for the following bathing task."
Han Fei stared at the digital clock on the wall, continuously giving himself mental reassurance.
By 12:05 a.m., he lay on the bed, covering himself completely with a blanket, leaving only a small opening to secretly observe the outside.
"During the last sleep task, the ghost appeared at 2:44 a.m."
"Today, I'm starting the task at 12:05 a.m. If the ghost appears at 2:44 a.m. again, I just need to endure for twenty-one minutes, and the task will be completed."
"It's somewhat challenging, but not impossible. Compared to last time, I now have a passive exclusive skill—hide and seek. As long as I hide well, my presence will be minimized."
The sleep task had already begun, and Han Fei felt confident. "The early part of the task doesn't need to be too tense. The key lies in the last half hour. However, I mustn't take it lightly. According to the task description, each failure will slightly increase the difficulty of the beginner tasks. I must be prepared to deal with unexpected situations."
Huddled under the blanket, Han Fei held the handle of the kitchen knife in one hand and tightly gripped the mop handle in the other. His entire body tensed, resembling a leopard in hunting mode—serious expression, sharp gaze.
Who could have imagined that just a few days ago, he was trapped in a messy room, with dishevelled hair and a face full of despair, playing games day and night.
As the night grew late, the room became extremely quiet, with only the ticking sound of the electronic clock—tick-tock, tick-tock.
Han Fei calculated the time in his mind, his eyes fixed on the lock of the bathroom door, focusing all his attention on it.
But at 12:14 a.m., the silent room suddenly filled with creaking sounds.
"The bathroom door lock didn't move. The sound came from elsewhere!"
In the dead silence of the room, every sound was amplified. Han Fei carefully determined the source of the noise, shifting his gaze away from the bathroom, gradually moving.
"That sounds like the sound of a door opening? The one room in the deepest part of the house!"
Han Fei's gaze stopped at the entrance of the bedroom. He saw a half-face of a child outside his room.
The child's features were blurry, slowly peeking into the bedroom.
Han Fei held his breath, not daring to move.
The child investigated the room for a while, then withdrew their partially deformed body and walked past the doorway of Han Fei's room.
"It's only 12:14 a.m. Is this too early?"
From his bedroom, Han Fei couldn't see the living room or the bedroom in the deepest part of the haunted house. It was only after hearing the door hinges that he realized something had come out of that room.
"The bedroom in the deepest part of the haunted house is the most dangerous. The sleep task has already changed. The ghost appeared earlier, but there is some good news—it seems that the ghost is not interested in me."
The child moved around the living room and finally sat on the sofa. From the bedroom, Han Fei could see the back of the child's head. Now, he was worried that the child's head would suddenly turn 180 degrees to face him.
The room was filled with unease, and Han Fei hid under the blanket, not daring to extend even his fingers.
"It's okay, just hold on for a little over two more hours."
The child remained seated on the sofa without moving until 12:44 a.m. Suddenly, without any warning, a woman with long hair passed by Han Fei's bedroom door and sat silently on the sofa next to the child.
"Another one?"
The woman's figure was also somewhat blurry. She picked up the TV remote control and silently sat next to the child.
Staring at the two ghosts sitting on the sofa with their backs to him, Han Fei's hairs stood on end. He felt fear if they didn't turn around, but he would probably feel even more fear if they did.
Time seemed to slow down, each moment becoming more difficult to endure. Since the two ghosts sat on the living room sofa, Han Fei hadn't changed his posture. He didn't dare to breathe too heavily.
Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock...
The ticking sound of the electronic clock gradually mingled with other sounds, as if water droplets were falling.
At 1:04 a.m., the kitchen door was pushed open. A woman with short hair, her head lowered, stood at the doorway holding a fruit knife, seemingly searching for something.
At 1:14 a.m., footsteps were heard from the deepest bedroom.
At 2:44 a.m., the bathroom door lock started trembling gently. Soon after, the bedroom door opened slightly.
And through that crack, a pair of eyes stared directly at Han Fei's bedroom.
A pale arm emerged from the bathroom, sticky black hair clinging to the face. The person crawled out of the bathroom and disappeared from Han Fei's sight in the next
moment.
The temperature in the bedroom gradually dropped, and Han Fei clenched his teeth. He heard something brushing against the bedsheets, and strands of black hair seemed to hang down from the gap in the blanket, as if someone was crouching by the edge of the bed, lowering their head, ready to crawl into the blanket.
Han Fei covered his mouth and nose, his eyes fixed on the gap in the blanket. It was already 2:45 a.m., and the three-hour mark was about to be reached.
A chilling sensation pierced his heart and lungs. Han Fei's face turned purple. When he was about to reach his limit, the television in the living room turned on, casting a faint cold light into the room, gradually dissipating the coldness.
Han Fei released his grip and looked toward the living room. When he saw the sofa again, another figure had appeared.
"The bathing task requires going to the bathroom, and it's difficult to escape supernatural events in such a confined space. However, I can log out at any time. If I encounter something beyond my tolerance, I can simply quit."
