Chapter 22: This Child Insists on Coming to Our House to Play
Han Fei realized that the old woman was not telling a story; she was talking about something that had happened to her.
The more kind-hearted a person is, the more uneasy and tormented they will feel after doing something against their conscience.
This guilt becomes a sickness, lingering in their hearts, causing a dull ache whenever they think about it.
Looking at the old woman's current state, Han Fei didn't know what to say.
The human heart is complex; even a kind-hearted person can become an accomplice.
The old woman's health wasn't good. She covered her chest and didn't continue speaking.
During his conversation with Meng Shi earlier, Han Fei noticed something worth noting.
The NPCs in the game seemed to lack memories of their own deaths, which was strange.
The victims of the fourth-floor human jigsaw puzzle had their despair and pain etched into their bones before they died. They became crazy and lost all rationality, forgetting many things, except for the cruel fact of their own brutal murder.
On the other hand, the old woman Meng Shi, on the third floor, was the opposite. She was kind and gentle, still remembering things from her life but forgetting the fact that she was already dead.
Both were deceased, but Chen Ge suspected that the difference in their condition was related to their state at the time of death.
Those who were tortured and killed, filled with resentment and pain, would become insane in the game.
For people like the old woman, who had hidden secrets behind their cause of death, they were able to maintain their sanity. Perhaps when the old woman died, she didn't harbour much hatred in her heart, only regret and remorse.
The specific reason was still unclear to Han Fei. This game was full of unknowns, and he needed to investigate step by step.
"Player with ID 0000, please take note! G-grade common quest 'Listen and Accompany' has been completed! Meng Shi's friendliness increased by ten!"
"Player with ID 0000, please take note! Meng Shi's friendliness has reached the standard! Congratulations on gaining Meng Shi's friendship! You have now learned how to get along harmoniously with your neighbours!"
Han Fei scrolled through the attribute panel, and there was now a Life Map, with Meng Shi's name appearing under the Neighbour section.
"Meng Shi (Slight Regret): A kind-hearted woman who feels indebted to the world and many people. Possesses a selfless personality."
Staring at the character information, Han Fei was puzzled. "What does the 'slight regret' after the old woman's name mean?"
He tried to touch the words "slight regret" on the attribute panel, and a cold mechanical synthesizing sound appeared in his mind.
"The majority of normal residents in this world harbours some regrets. It may be a certain obsession, an irretrievable past, or an unresolved emotional knot."
"The regret level is divided into three categories: slight, significant, and extreme. Different levels of regret have different manifestations."
Hearing the voice in his mind, Han Fei became even more confused. "In other words, the levels of NPCs are divided into three categories? No, the system only mentioned that most normal residents in this world have regrets, but in this underworld world, there are ghosts and many abnormal individuals! They should have a different classification system."
After obtaining Meng Shi's friendship, Han Fei learned about the level classification for normal residents. However, if he wanted to know the level classification for ghosts and abnormal individuals, he would probably have to gain the friendship of a certain ghost or abnormal individual first.
The three hours passed quickly, and Han Fei put on the jade pendant given by the old woman and arrived at the front door.
His fingers still felt a chilling coldness from wearing the ring. Han Fei knew that the child hadn't gone far and was still lingering near the door.
"Auntie, I think that child might continue to stay by the door. When I open the door, I'll lead him away first, and then you immediately go to the house across to find Chenchen. Don't hesitate." Han Fei was more worried about the old woman. After all, she was in her seventies and had limited mobility.
"Okay." The old woman was also determined to save her grandson.
"I'll count to three, and when I open the door, make sure you only come out after that child has followed me." Han Fei took out the bunch of keys from his pocket and held the key to the security door in his hand. "Get ready!"
"One, two, three!"
As the security door opened, Han Fei rushed out like an arrow.
Once inside the hallway, his fingers immediately froze, and he heard the child crying.
Looking back, he saw a pale child crawling on the stairs!
Han Fei rushed up the stairs, three steps at a time. When he reached the fourth floor, he felt a sudden weight on his back.
"It climbed onto my back?!"
A chilling sensation spread from his back to his neck, then to his cheeks. Han Fei couldn't afford to be distracted and quickly inserted the key into the lock.
He turned the key with all his strength, his eyes fixed on the door!
As the chilling sensation passed over his cheek, just before the security door opened, a pale child's face appeared from his shoulder, reaching out in front of him!
The two faces were only a few inches apart. Han Fei's hair stood on end, and if it were someone else, they would have been scared to madness. But he clenched his teeth and managed to open the security door in this situation.
His neck felt deformed from the pressure, making it difficult to breathe. The child wanted to push Han Fei down the stairs, but Han Fei, with a desperate determination, rushed into the room.
He fell to the ground, and the child who had been strangling him sat on his shoulder. The cold little hands covered his eyes.
The terrifying crying echoed in his mind. Han Fei didn't have time to think about anything else and crawled towards the deepest room in the haunted house. He remembered that the monster disappeared from there.
The small increase in stamina from levelling up became crucial. He successfully crawled to the doorway of that room, pounding on the door desperately.
The door shook. This haunted house seemed to have never been so lively before.
"Wei Youfu!"
The dusty door of the bedroom was finally smashed open, and a cold wind blew out from it. The small hands covering Han Fei's eyes slowly loosened.
Only then did Han Fei see seven figures sitting with their backs to him by the bedside in the deepest part of the haunted house.
The room felt as cold as an ice cellar, pitch black and bone-chilling.
At this moment, Han Fei made a move that even the ghosts hadn't anticipated. With the child sitting on his shoulder, he directly crawled into the bedroom and closed the door behind him!
In the pitch-blackness, the child's crying became even more piercing. Han Fei couldn't see anything. He trembled and muttered, "This child insists on coming to play, wanting a friend. I thought our house had so many friends, he must be happy."
When the pressure on his shoulder disappeared, Han Fei didn't hesitate for a second. He immediately opened the bedroom door and rushed out.
The child on his back was gone, and Han Fei realized that the sound of the child crying remained inside the bedroom.
He collapsed on the ground, taking a long breath. "That scared me."
When the child had choked him earlier, he genuinely thought he was going to die.
After checking the bedroom door to make sure it was securely closed, Han Fei ran to the living room. "The mission to find Chenchen hasn't been completed yet. I hope nothing has happened to the old lady on the other side."
