Chapter 23: My Game of Hide-and-Seek

In the entire building, Han Fei only had one friend, the old woman. He had put in a lot of effort to increase Meng Shi's friendliness, and if something happened to her, all his previous efforts would be in vain.

"I've trapped the crying child. In theory, the room should be safe. Could it be that Chenchen is not in Room 1034?"

Han Fei picked up a kitchen knife and ran towards the third floor. The heavily sealed security door covered in talismans was completely open, but there was no sign of the old woman.

"Auntie? Chenchen?" Han Fei reached into the room with the ring on his hand, but the ring didn't have much of a reaction, indicating that it was safe inside.

Hesitating for a moment, he cautiously entered Room 1034 and looked at the dilapidated furniture inside.

The room was also filled with talismans, covering the floor, walls, and ceiling. The entire room was sealed off by talismans.

"This is too bizarre! Even the haunted house I live in doesn't have this many talismans!"

Han Fei was extremely cautious. "Something doesn't feel right. The child who came to play at my house didn't seem strong enough to warrant such a setup. There might be something else in the room."

Although the ring didn't react, Han Fei decided to retreat first. However, as he tried to move back, he suddenly realized that the door of Room 1034 had been closed at some point.

Cold sweat instantly broke out, and Han Fei's body froze in place. "No way?"

He had just locked the child in the bedroom, and now he was trapped in Room 1034 himself. The world worked in mysterious ways, and Han Fei felt on the verge of collapse.

"What should I do? Should I let Wei Youfu bring the child over for a hostage exchange? But Wei Youfu and the others wouldn't listen to me! Besides, the child is probably already reincarnated by now."

Standing still, Han Fei tried to twist the doorknob, but even though the security door was not locked, he couldn't open it.

"Such nerve! Even in the afterlife, they still play dirty tricks."

After hesitating for over ten seconds at the door, Han Fei finally calmed down.

"The ring from the landlady still hasn't sent a chill down my spine. That's probably the only good news so far."

There was something dangerous in the room, but the presence hadn't leaked out, hiding for some reason.

Knowing that he couldn't leave temporarily, Han Fei's mind started racing as he scanned the room with his peripheral vision.

"The windows are completely boarded up with planks and covered in talismans. It seems escaping through the window won't work. Room 1034 is directly below the haunted house where I live. If I make a big enough noise here, the residents in the building should react."

His gaze shifted quietly to the kitchen, and he glanced at the gas stove. "This house hasn't had anyone living in it for a long time. The gas supply is probably cut off. Even if it's not, causing a big explosion would definitely be the end of me."

Han Fei went through every possible method he could think of, but in the end, he reluctantly realized that he couldn't find a way to escape.

"I can leave the game now, but the problem is that when I log back in, I'll still be in this room. It'll be impossible to escape then."

Gathering his spirits, Han Fei decided to thoroughly investigate the room while he still had the option to quit the game. Since there was no way to avoid it, he would take it step by step.

Han Fei held the pendant given by the old woman to his neck and slowly moved in the living room.

He didn't dare to make any sound and tried to move as slowly as possible.

The room, covered in talismans, was quite frightening. There were scattered grains of rice on the floor, and there were altars in the corners with various objects. Occasionally, torn paper dolls could be seen.

The fragmented faces were painted with various colours, giving an eerie feeling.

"What happened in Room 1034 in the past? Why is that child called Cry?"

Thinking about the situation, Han Fei pushed open the bedroom door.

The rusty door hinges creaked, and just as Han Fei was about to enter the room, a blindfolded child suddenly hugged his waist.

"I caught you!"

"Chenchen?" Han Fei stared at the blindfolded child at the doorway, then looked inside the bedroom, where Meng Shi had fainted on the ground, her worn-out clothes covered in handprints from the child.

"I finally caught you!"

Chenchen smiled happily, but Han Fei raised his hand and slapped him on the back of the head. "You still have the mood to play?"

He took off the blindfold covering Chenchen's eyes and realized something was wrong. Chenchen's eyes were completely white, like he had been possessed, and his appearance was terrifying.

"I caught you! It's time for you to become a ghost! It's time for you to become a ghost... It's time for you to become a ghost!"

Chenchen repeated this sentence continuously, his voice growing louder. The echo filled the room, as if there were others repeating the same words.

Han Fei wanted to cover Chenchen's mouth, but even if he did, the voice would still be present in the room. What's worse, the ring on Han Fei's hand started emanating a chilling sensation!

Ghosts were coming!

A cold aura spread from various directions. Han Fei protected Meng Shi and Chenchen behind him, turning his head to look around.

"It's time for you to become a ghost, it's time for you to become a ghost..."

The altar in the corner was overturned, wet handprints appeared on the walls, and from the closet, a pale hand reached out, followed by a half-visible pale face.

The empty living room filled with the sound of footsteps. A round head poked out from behind the television, and a girl with her hair tied in a ponytail crawled out from behind the sofa.

Terrifying voices kept coming, from the shoe cabinet, the kitchen, the paintings, the curtains, the sheets—pale-skinned children with only white eyes crawled out one by one.

Han Fei felt out of breath, his legs weakened, and he leaned against the wall to prevent himself from falling.

These children seemed to be the missing children from the neighbourhood, and their numbers were so great that it sent shivers down one's spine!

The air in the room had solidified, and all the children looked at Han Fei.

It was an suffocating scene that almost made Han Fei lose consciousness. His heart felt like it was about to burst out of his throat.

The children's voices gradually lowered, and a disturbing cry echoed in the room. Following the cry, Han Fei saw a dark figure crouched in the corner of the room.

This figure was shorter than the other children and was different from them.

"Is it the true Cry?"

One by one, the children entered the bedroom, blindfolds covering their eyes, staring fixedly at HanFei's eyes, continuously repeating the phrase "It's time for you to become a ghost."

Han Fei had always refused to comply. At this moment, one of the children suddenly pounced on him, their sharp nails aiming for his eyes!

If he wouldn't wear the blindfold, would they try to blind him?

Small hands grabbed Han Fei's clothes, preventing him from moving. Now he could only watch as those fingers grew larger in his pupils.

Everything seemed predetermined. Just as Han Fei felt the pain, the protective charm on his neck suddenly made a crisp sound, and a chilling aura instantly burst forth.

"Bang!"

The child, who had been ready to gouge out Han Fei's eyes, fell to the ground, holding their broken fingers and crying in pain. The other children were frightened and let go of Han Fei's clothes.

"Did Auntie's protective charm save me?" Han Fei looked down and saw the cracks on the charm around his neck. Using it one more time would probably shatter it completely.

"What should I do? The other side will eventually discover the secret of the protective charm! I must find a way to escape as soon as possible!"

A faint crying sound reached his ears. The dark figure had entered the bedroom unnoticed. It seemed to represent the darkness and coldness of the entire house. It was the true "Cry"!

While the other children hesitated to approach, it silently stared at Han Fei. Then it picked up the blindfold from the ground and extended it toward him.

Meng Shi's protective charm could only be used one more time. Han Fei knew that even if he refused the "Cry," it wouldn't change his situation. Every nerve in his body was tense, and he understood that this was the most critical moment.

Han Fei didn't reach out to take the blindfold from "Cry," nor did he refuse to play the game of hide-and-seek. After thinking for a moment, a wicked and cruel smile appeared on his face.

Squatting down, Han Fei brought his face close to the dark figure. "Ordinary hide-and-seek isn't fun. Let's play a bigger game."

With one hand in his pocket, Han Fei's face revealed a hint of obsession, and his eyes were filled with uncontrollable excitement. "Instead of a ghost seeking all the people, how about we reverse it? Let all of you ghosts come and find only me!"

His lips curled up, and Han Fei's face was almost pressed against the dark figure. "I'll wager my own life. If you can find me within an hour, you can dispose of me as you wish. But if you can't find me, you'll have to do three things for me."

His eyes burning with malice and madness, Han Fei looked just like the burst of chilling aura from the protective charm. At this moment, the little ghosts in the room sensed a familiar presence in him.

The room gradually fell silent. It was unclear how much time had passed, but the dark figure nodded, leading all the little ghosts out of the bedroom.

Han Fei also supported Meng Shi and Chenchen and followed them. He placed Meng Shi and Chenchen at the entrance of the living room, and his smile grew even more sinister. His body trembled with excitement, as if he couldn't contain it any longer. "If you can't find me in this house, you can try the neighbouring houses in the building. Consider it a hint from me."

When all the little ghosts and the dark figure turned away, Han Fei approached the entrance of the living room. Once again, he tried to turn the doorknob, but the door still wouldn't open.

"What an interesting bunch of little ghosts." Han Fei looked down on all the children in the room. "Remember our wager and give it your all to find me!"

With the cruellest and most evil expression on his face, Han Fei laughed without a care. "Now, let the game begin!"

Opening the character panel, Han Fei chose to exit the game.

The world turned blood-red, everything spun, and when Han Fei opened his eyes again, he took off the game helmet.

His entire body was drenched in sweat as Han Fei desperately grasped his hair, his eyes bloodshot.

"It's over, it's over. I've really gone too far with my act this time!"
