Chapter 46: Fifth Floor

Han Fei wasn't a detective, so it was better to leave the case-solving to the police. His role was merely to provide clues.

After determining his position, Han Fei felt somewhat relieved. "Until the culprit is caught, I must maintain a low profile and appear no different from others."

Glancing back at the filming location of the Evil Flower crew, Han Fei worried that the killer might come looking for them. After all, their movie was based on a real case, and many serial killers had a twisted preference for appreciating their own "work."

Having a simple meal, Han Fei returned to his own home.

Upon entering, he didn't immediately go inside but first made sure no one was there.

"Being on edge every day is making me develop some strange habits."

Closing the door, he turned on the TV, bringing some life into the rented room.

After taking a refreshing hot shower, Han Fei sat in a chair, dumbbell in one hand and a book on criminal psychology in the other. "When a person's criminal psychology develops to the point of altering their personality, it indicates that their criminal psychology has become fixed. Correcting this ingrained criminal mindset requires extremely delicate, complex, and long-term work..."

Consistency is key, and learning is a lengthy process. Dreaming of becoming a comedian, Han Fei believed that as long as he persisted, even after his dreams of being an actor shattered, he could still become an excellent auxiliary police officer.

At eleven fifty in the evening, Han Fei connected all the cables and lay on his bed with a gaming headset.

"I can't communicate with the victims from the 1044 Murder House for now. But familiarity breeds comfort, and for now, they don't seem to have the intention to kill me. That's fortunate in this unfortunate situation."

Midnight arrived, and Han Fei put on the gaming headset. With the arrival of a blood-red scene, the chilling mechanical synthesized voice resounded in his mind.

"Welcome to the Perfect Life! Now you can choose your own perfect life."

Opening his eyes, Han Fei looked at the gloomy and desolate living room, grinning. "Could you give me more options?"

The digital clock on the wall pointed directly at midnight. Han Fei picked up the kitchen knife from the floor and gazed at the closed door of the deepest bedroom in the Murder House.

Among the entire 1044 Murder House, only the door to that bedroom remained tightly shut.

Han Fei didn't have the courage to approach it proactively yet. The seven victims could only maintain their sanity when they were separated, but when they merged into one, they turned into a monster dominated by despair and suffering.

"I've completed the beginner tasks. Looks like I might have to go out tonight."

Han Fei opened the task panel, and the previous three beginner tasks had disappeared, replaced by a new one—visit the neighbour on the fifth floor and greet them.

"Just based on the task name, it really feels like a healing game." Han Fei scratched his head. "Meng Shi mentioned that a crazy woman named Xu Qin lives on the fifth floor, and she could be a good friend. Since I have to do this task, I might as well visit her on the fifth floor."

In reality, Han Fei would avoid unfamiliar people and preferred to be alone. But in the game, he became particularly fond of making friends.

"What gift should I bring when visiting a new neighbour?" Han Fei looked at the kitchen knife in his hand. "Never mind, I'll decide after meeting the person."

With the decision made, Han Fei turned on the TV. He wanted to try and see if he could lure his roommates out.

If his roommates helped trigger a new task, he wouldn't have to leave the warmth and safety of his home.

Until three in the morning, Han Fei stared at the TV screen that had no signal for three hours straight. He cycled through all the channels more than a dozen times, but his roommates still didn't appear.

"I must go out and complete the task." Han Fei picked up the kitchen knife and checked his inventory. "The landlord's ring can detect ghosts, and the landlord's key should be able to open all the doors in the building. The problem is, none of the keys are numbered, so I'll have to try them one by one. The landlord's diary is blank for now, so I don't know its purpose yet. As for the landlord's three cigarettes..."

Han Fei clicked on the inventory and took out the cigarettes.

"After the landlord's death, his three children paid their respects with three cigarettes. These cigarettes are consumable items, but I don't know what will happen when I light them."

"The initial sleeping task and the sleeping task after the difficulty increase are completely incomparable. If the difficulty and reward are directly proportional, then this additional reward should be great."

Finding a lighter in the kitchen, Han Fei decided that when he was in a desperate situation, he would light a cigarette to calm himself.

After organizing all his equipment, Han Fei stood beside the security door. First, he observed the surroundings through the peephole to make sure no one was nearby before daring to open the door.

Throughout the process, Han Fei made no sound.

The hallway was pitch black, and just looking at it gave an eerie feeling.

"The newbie protection period is over, and the vengeful ghosts may be more active now. I need to be cautious at all times."

To prevent the door of the Murder House from being closed, Han Fei brought a chair from the living room and wedged it against the door frame.

This way when he returned, he wouldn't need to open the door again, saving time. Additionally, if any neighbours got curious and entered his home, they would all gather around for a meal, although they would be sitting on chairs while the neighbour might end up lying on the dining table.

Taking a deep breath, Han Fei quietly stepped out of the 1044 Murder House.

Taking slow steps, it was Han Fei's first time going out after the newbie protection period ended, and he

could clearly feel that something had changed within the apartment building.

His body seemed to sink into a viscous black sea, with his consciousness gradually descending.

Han Fei pressed his palm against the wall, keeping his body close to it, so as not to be seen by the people on the upper floors.

Han Fei had never been to the fifth floor before, and he moved very slowly, taking a full minute to reach the space between the fourth and fifth floors.

Looking up, Han Fei halted his steps.

There were four households on the fifth floor, and one of the doors was open, with a dark figure standing in front of it.

At three in the morning, in the silent hallway, having someone standing quietly at their own doorstep felt eerie no matter how you looked at it.

Han Fei didn't dare to move forward, but the black figure in the hallway seemed to have seen him. In the blink of an eye, they disappeared.

"What was that?"

The figure vanished, but Han Fei's door was still open. Now, he was worried that if he went over, something would drag him into that room.

The pitch-black doorway was unclear, and he couldn't see what was inside, but it gave him an extremely uneasy feeling.

"Xu Qin lives in room 1052, and the figure just stood in front of room 1051..."

Han Fei shifted his gaze to room 1052. His courage, which had just swelled up, diminished significantly.

The door of room 1052 was covered in words about death, with dark brown bloodstains seeping out from underneath.
