Chapter 47: Don't Look Back

"The door is covered in words about death, and blood is seeping out from underneath. Is such a neighbour suitable to be a friend?"

Meng Shi said that Xu Qin lived in Room 1052 and despite her eccentric behaviour, she was a good person.

At first, Han Fei had some expectations for Xu Qin and thought that they could get along well. But upon seeing the door covered in words about death, he suddenly realized that Meng Shi's opinion of Xu Qin being a good person was in comparison to the other neighbours on the same floor.

Among a group of deranged serial killers, vengeful ghosts, and monsters, any slight positive traits in Xu Qin would be greatly magnified.

Now, Han Fei was in a dilemma. He needed to complete a task to leave the game, but there were no more tasks available from his "familiar" neighbours. He could only explore the unfamiliar floors.

However, the unfamiliar floors were clearly very dangerous, and he didn't have a hundred percent assurance that he could escape back.

"The newly appeared task must be forcing me to explore unknown areas. I still remember when I first exited the game, the system mentioned that it hoped I would speed up my exploration."

Looking at the pitch-black hallway, Han Fei tightly gripped the kitchen knife and slowly lifted his footsteps.

"Since I can't escape, I can only move forward."

Just as his lifted foot landed on the step, Han Fei heard a "clatter" sound from downstairs, as if the chains on the iron door at the entrance of the hallway had been removed.

"The iron door at the entrance of the hallway has been opened. Has someone left the apartment building? Or is someone entering the apartment building from outside?"

The motion-activated lights on the first floor turned on. Han Fei quietly approached the railing, finding an angle to look down.

A shadow appeared on the wall between the first and second floors, as if someone was lying on the ground.

"The situation doesn't look good."

After seeing the strange shadow, Han Fei immediately considered retreating to the Murder House. But just as he was about to turn around, he heard a cold, mechanical voice in his mind.

"Player with ID 0000, please take note! You entered the hallway at 3:04 am and triggered the hidden hallway task—Don't Look Back."

"Hidden task: Within fifteen minutes, no matter what happens, do not retreat or look back. If you violate this, you will die."

After hearing the cold, synthesized voice in his mind, Han Fei's heart sank.

His body froze in place, not daring to move his neck.

"Why did I trigger another hidden task? Didn't Huang Ying say that the probability of triggering hidden tasks is extremely low and that they are very rare? I've only reached level three, but I've already encountered two hidden tasks!"

Holding his breath, Han Fei strained his ears to listen. His Adam's apple trembled. "I can't retreat or look back within fifteen minutes, or I will die? The description of this task is so direct, leaving no room for interpretation!"

Maintaining his position, Han Fei stopped between the fourth and fifth floors. He now knew that there was someone lying on the ground trying to run upstairs on the first floor, and there was a dark figure that had just entered a room on the fifth floor—neither of them was friendly.

His breathing became increasingly rapid, and the task required Han Fei not to retreat. If something were to approach him, his only choice would be to run upstairs. However, the danger upstairs was clearly much greater than downstairs, as he still vividly remembered that his arms were torn off after crying while going upstairs.

"What should I do? Should I light a cigarette to calm myself down?"

Wearing the protective amulet given by Meng Shi, Han Fei felt around his pocket and found his lighter. He didn't know what would happen when he lit a cigarette, but he just wanted to be prepared in advance.

The motion-activated lights remained off, but Han Fei could hear faint, scattered footsteps coming from behind him. It felt as if the other person had just learned how to walk.

Slowly pressing against the wall, Han Fei now wished that his passive ability, Hide and Seek, could take effect. Unfortunately, Hide and Seek only reduced his presence, and there was no obstacle in the hallway. As a person of his size, anyone who wasn't blind could see him.

The footsteps from downstairs grew closer, and Han Fei's heart tightened.

One of the task requirements was not to retreat, and Han Fei didn't dare to easily go upstairs unless it was necessary. The further he went upstairs, the farther he would be from the Murder House.

In the dead of night, standing alone in the hallway, listening to the footsteps growing closer from behind, Han Fei's heartbeat uncontrollably sped up.

He instinctively gripped the kitchen knife tightly, and the footsteps behind him became clear. Until a certain moment, they suddenly disappeared.

"No more sound?"

Han Fei fought back the urge to look back. He maintained his position, but just a few seconds later, something unexpected happened in the hallway.

"Creak..."

The chair wedged against the entrance of the Murder House was moved, and the security door of 1044 Murder House was gently closed!

Now the door of the Murder House closed, Han Fei felt as if he had lost the connection to his home. A chilling coldness crawled up his ankles and onto his chest, and his calves trembled slightly.

Tick-tock, tick-tock.

Whether it was water droplets or blood droplets, a sticky liquid dripped onto his back. Han Fei could sense that there was something standing behind him.

Without turning back, Han Fei took a step forward. Just as he lifted his foot, two sets of footsteps appeared in the hallway.

"It's only been a minute..."

Han Fei struggled to remain calm, but even if his mental resilience was strong, he couldn't control the rising fear within him.

"Don't panic. As long as I don't look back within fifteen minutes, I can complete this hidden task, and then I can exit the game directly."

Biting his tongue, Han Fei used the pain to dispel his fear. "The other party doesn't currently have the intention to kill me. Hopefully, they will treat me like a cat playing with a mouse, slowly torturing me, so I can buy some more time."

"Oh? You're trapped here too?"

While Han Fei was contemplating, a voice that was incredibly familiar to him suddenly sounded behind him. The voice gave him a very friendly feeling, as if it belonged to a friend from before. However, he couldn't remember who the voice belonged to.

"I didn't expect to see you in this ghostly place. How did you get in?"

The voice came again, but Han Fei still didn't turn around.

Although the voice felt incredibly familiar and the tone of the conversation was very friendly, and the topics being discussed piqued his interest, Han Fei understood he had never had any friends before! Not even one!

So, that voice must be coming from a ghost, trying to trick him into looking back.

The ghost standing behind Han Fei probably didn't expect this, and was still trying to deceive him with

a friendly tone.

To buy more time, Han Fei quickly got into character. He adjusted his tone as if he was about to recall who the person behind him was.
