Chapter 8: The System's Judgment of a Good Person
Han Fei chatted with Li Xue for a while, thinking that they were both "suspects," until he realized she was a police officer.
Standing at the door of the interrogation room, watching Li Xue's retreating figure, Han Fei didn't feel as desperate anymore. At least now there was a former detective willing to listen to him.
"Hey! Don't be deceived by her appearance. Here, at most, you'll be held for a period. But if you end up in her hands, even if you don't die, you'll be skinned alive." Zhang Xiaotian signalled Han Fei to follow him to another room.
In the small room, a middle-aged police officer was angrily speaking on the phone. He was the one who had reprimanded Li Xue earlier.
He had a dignified appearance and a powerful voice, but Li Xue simply ignored him.
"Captain Wang, calm down. She's a detective who has received first-class honours twice. She's just here to experience life with us. There's no need for you to argue with her." Zhao Ming quickly poured a glass of water and placed it next to the middle-aged police officer.
"So, what if she has received first-class honours twice? Do you think she looks like a police officer? If she doesn't want to work, she doesn't need to come and bother me!" The middle-aged police officer was still fuming.
"If you really fire her, her parents will definitely celebrate and give you a commendation plaque. I heard her family background is quite good, and her parents have always opposed her being a police officer." Zhao Ming realized that the middle-aged police officer seemed even angrier after his remark, so he quickly changed the subject. "Captain Wang, this is Han Fei. I've brought him here."
Upon hearing Han Fei's name, Captain Wang, the middle-aged police officer, finally stopped his outburst and entered work mode. "Young man, sorry to keep you waiting for so long. We have some questions we want to ask you, and we hope you won't hide anything."
Han Fei had lived an honest and ordinary life for over twenty years, and this was his first time in a police station. He couldn't help but feel nervous. "Don't worry, I'll definitely cooperate with your investigation."
With the rapid development of technology, police investigations had become much easier. Every citizen had their own information persona model, and computers could even predict a person's potential for criminal tendencies.
In addition, many police officers had specialized lie detection apps and case analysis tools on their phones. With the assistance of computers, the probability of wrongful convictions and false accusations had been minimized.
They talked for a full hour before they let Han Fei leave.
Whether it was computer analysis or big data personality modelling, Han Fei had no suspicion of committing a crime. The system gave him an extremely rare and low danger rating.
In other words, not only was Han Fei unlikely to commit a crime, but he was also a genuinely good person.
At least, that's what the Citizen Information System believed.
"Captain Wang, are we just letting him go like this?"
"We have no choice but to let him go. As a police station, we don't have the authority to detain suspects," Captain Wang said, looking at Han Fei's citizen information on the table, furrowing his brows. "Our jurisdiction has been rated as the safest area in Xinhu Old City for the past five years, but this month we had such a big case, and the Forensics Department still hasn't determined the cause of the fire. This matter is definitely not simple."
"How about Zhang Xiaotian and I keep an eye on him?" Zhao Ming suggested.
"Be careful and make sure he doesn't notice you," Captain Wang collected all the information related to Han Fei. "In all my years as a police officer, this is the first time I've seen an adult with a danger rating of zero. My old teachers used to say that there are generally two types of adults with a danger rating of zero. One type is individuals with simple minds and inherently good nature, but even for such people, it is unlikely for their danger rating to consistently remain at zero."
"What about the other type of person?" Zhang Xiaotian and Zhao Ming both gathered around.
"The other type is the most dangerous and cunning, highly intelligent individuals who are skilled in hacking and self-hypnosis techniques—a super criminal. They are masters at manipulating human nature and will go to any lengths to suppress their own criminal personality. These individuals may appear harmless and innocent on the surface, but their inner nature is twisted to the extreme."
"Do you think Han Fei is such a person?"
"I'm not sure, but it's better to be cautious."
Standing at the entrance of the police station, "super-criminal" Han Fei muttered to himself softly while holding a bread he had just bought from a vending machine. "Do they not provide meals when they detain people at the police station?"
It was almost 11 am, and Li Xue still hadn't responded to his messages. After finishing the bread, Han Fei decided to go home first.
But before he could take a few steps, his phone suddenly vibrated.
Glancing at the caller ID, Han Fei felt quite surprised.
"Director Jiang, do you have something to discuss with me?"
"Come to North Street in the Old City area at 1 pm today. I'm preparing for a new drama, and you can come and audition."
Han Fei was about to say that he had encountered some issues recently and wasn't planning to audition, but unfortunately, the other party hung up the phone directly.
"Hello? Director Jiang?" Han Fei listened to the busy tone on the other end of the phone and pursed his dry lips.
"I can't even force a smile now. My state of mind is no longer suitable for being an actor."
Despite his words, Han Fei decided to go in the afternoon. When he was at a dead end, someone was willing to give him an opportunity. If he didn't go, it would feel disrespectful.
After taking a shower and changing into new clothes, Han Fei hurriedly headed to North Street in the Old City area.
New Shanghai was an international metropolis, occupying a vast area. The core area had been transformed into a smart technology city, with tall buildings and numerous companies gathering top talents from across the country.
Compared to the core area, the old city area appeared somewhat rundown, maintaining its appearance from years ago.
"Excuse me, is Director Jiang Yi here?" Han Fei arrived at North Street in the old city and was surprised to find two film crews shooting there. One was a modern urban romantic comedy, and the other seemed to be a thriller crime genre.
Since his previous works were all related to comedy, Han Fei first approached the crew of the urban romantic comedy to inquire.
"Han Fei?" a staff member who was checking the actors' sign-in sheet recognized him immediately. "Weren't you fired by the company? Why did you come back?"
"Is this the company's production?" Han Fei was also puzzled. "Director Jiang Yi asked me to come for an audition."
"Our urban secret love drama crew doesn't have a director named Jiang Yi. Did you come to the wrong place?" The staff member was just a low-level errand runner for the company, and he sympathized with Han Fei's situation, so he wouldn't deliberately give him a hard time.
"Not Jiang Yi?" Han Fei knew the address was correct, so if the director of this urban romantic comedy wasn't Jiang Yi, then Jiang Yi should oversee the other production.
Turning slowly, Han Fei looked at the gloomy residential building on the other side of the street. A poster with three blood-red characters, "Evil Flower," was posted on the tightly closed apartment door.
"Are they asking me to act in a horror film?"
Standing at the door of the interrogation room, watching Li Xue's retreating figure, Han Fei didn't feel as desperate anymore. At least now there was a former detective willing to listen to him.
