Chapter 9: He Acted as If He Had Experienced It Himself

Approaching the gloomy apartment building, Han Fei lightly knocked on the door, and soon a crew member came out.

"Director Jiang Yi asked me to come for an audition, but I've encountered some trouble recently, so..." Han Fei didn't have a chance to finish as the person enthusiastically pulled him into the apartment.

"You finally came! Director Jiang Yi is furious. The new actors nowadays are becoming more and more unbearable, completely unable to portray the feeling he wants. Jiang Yi has already rejected several people in a row."

"I haven't acted in a horror film before, and besides, I have something important tonight."

"Director Jiang! The new actor is here!" The crew member directly handed Han Fei a script. "Normal auditions would have a designated place, but we're a low-budget thriller mystery movie, so we don't pay much attention to that. Hurry over, Director Jiang and the others are getting anxious."

Holding the photocopy of the script, Han Fei was pushed into a room where six actors of various ages were standing against the wall, and everyone dared not speak.

"Are you all acting here? Have you ever truly respected this profession? This is ridiculous!" In the centre of the room, a middle-aged man pointed at the actors very sternly.

His voice was loud, and it even made one young girl cry.

"Why are you crying? Why is your blood only stuck to your clothes? There's none on your face or hands? Do you think the killer would be considerate enough to keep your face clean when they attacked you?"

"I'm telling you, if you can't stand the dirt and exhaustion, don't become an actor! I don't care if you were arranged by the investors or not. Since you've come to act in my play, you have to follow my requirements." Jiang Yi had a bad temper. He used to be a teacher at the New Shanghai Film and Television Academy and had taught the class that Han Fei was in.

He scolded them for a while before finally looking at Han Fei. "I've heard about your situation. I have a role here that you can try."

Looking at the atmosphere, Han Fei couldn't directly refuse to participate. So, he said politely, "Director Jiang, I haven't acted in a thriller before."

"The audience can define the actors, but the actors shouldn't define themselves. You are an actor, understand?" Jiang Yi walked to Han Fei's side with the script in his hand. "Our play is based on the real case from a few years ago, the Human Puzzle. The killer hasn't been caught yet. To make it easier for you to get into the character, I suggest you read the news reports from back then and try to imagine the characters' inner thoughts."

"Then who am I playing?"

"In the Human Puzzle case, the police released information about seven victims, but in reality, the killer used the bodies to create an eighth victim. You will be playing the second victim, Wei Youfu." Jiang Yi spoke rapidly, flipping through the script. "Let me give you a brief overview of the scene. Wei Youfu is an ordinary white-collar worker who works late into the night before returning home. However, when he gets home, he finds that his wife is not there. He sends several messages to his wife, and she replies saying she went back to her parents' home. Tired from work, he doesn't think much and goes straight into the bedroom. Here's the key point: his wife didn't go to her parents' home. She is already dead, and the killer is hiding in the bathroom, handling her body. The previous messages were sent by the killer."

"I want to ask, what is Wei Youfu's personality like?"

"Listen to me first. The most challenging part of this scene is in the second half. When Wei Youfu is half asleep and half awake, he hears the bathroom door open, and his wife's head is placed at the doorstep. In the instant fear ignites within him, an even greater fear strike! The killer steps out of the bathroom and regards him as the next target to kill." Jiang Yi highlighted a few key points on the script. "We can't show scenes like handling a body on the big screen, so we have to convey the brutality through your facial expressions. You must use your fear to drive the audience's fear! Can you, do it?"

"I'll give it a try. After all, I've never been involved in a horror film before." Han Fei's dream was to become a comedy actor, and he didn't know how he ended up auditioning for a horror movie.

"Great! Let's go to the set to get a feel for it." Jiang Yi waved his hand and called a few cameramen to go upstairs. "This is the shooting location we've chosen. We initially wanted to shoot at the crime scene, but we couldn't contact the owner of that murder house."

The room had already been prepared with blackout curtains, making it dim and gloomy when they were closed.

"Everyone, get ready! Cooperate with each other! The male antagonist hasn't arrived yet. Assistant, put on a mask and act as the killer in the bathroom. Time it so you open the door and place the severed head outside, then burst out of the bathroom."

After five minutes, everyone took their positions, and the room instantly fell silent.

Seeing Jiang Yi's gesture, Han Fei gradually entered the state.

Lying in the dim bedroom, his body slowly engulfed by darkness, Han Fei closed his eyes.

He didn't need to act at all. The terrifying memories from last night surfaced in his mind.

Gloomy, cold, bone-chilling despair that he couldn't escape from.

"Bang!"

In the quiet room, a sudden sound rang out, and Han Fei drowsily opened his eyes. His gaze swept across the living room, finally fixating on the lock of the bathroom door.

Everything seemed like a rehearsed scene that had been repeated many times. His wandering gaze gradually focused, and before Han Fei fully regained his senses, the doorknob of the bathroom turned on its own.

The light distorted as the bathroom door cracked open slightly.

A cold wind brushed against his cheek, and behind that pitch-black door seemed to hide a world of the deceased.

His pupils shrank, his heart pounded, and when five fingers extended from the door crack, the fear from Han Fei's memories was triggered!

His blood accelerated, his heart raced, adrenaline surged. Han Fei's face instantly turned pale. His body activated its self-protective mechanism, and the psychological fear directly caused physiological reactions.

His wife's head rolled out through the door crack, that familiar face rolling on the living room floor. It seemed like she was smiling, chasing after him, questioning why he didn't accompany her.

The fear concealed deep within Han Fei's consciousness was activated. At this moment, the bathroom door was fully opened, and a bloodstained knife came into view. The killer rushed towards him in the darkness!

The familiar darkness, the familiar sense of fear, but this time he had nowhere to escape!

The pale face hidden beneath the lampshade in his mind merged with the approaching killer. The fear deep within Han Fei's heart was ignited, and the real threat of death caused him to make the most terrified expression!

That gaze was indescribable, to the extent that even the approaching killer paused and turned to look behind himself.

"CUT!"

Jiang Yi, holding the script, rushed over in anger, and yelled at the assistant playing the killer, "Why did you turn your head! You're the killer! Why did you look back!"

"Not so, Brother Jiang." The assistant took off his mask, his face covered in cold sweat. "I saw the expression on Han Fei's face and actually thought there was something behind him, so I instinctively turned to look."

"You're playing the killer! What are you scared of! We wasted such a perfect shot, I'm so furious!" After saying that, Jiang Yi ran into the bedroom and personally helped Han Fei up. "Han Fei, your acting has improved so much! You have a talent for thrillers! I feel like you were born to act in thrillers!"

"Is my acting really that good?" Han Fei, now that his mood had settled, returned to his normal expression.

"Of course! You acted as if you had personally experienced it. It was amazing!"
